Please note this class is secular and no choral experience is needed. Sacred harp (or shape note) singing is a powerful traditional form of four part harmony from the Southern states of America, performed acappella (without instruments) that can range from a dozen to a thousand singers at each session. It has undergone a recent revival following its prominence in the soundtrack of the film Cold Mountain.
This session will feature members of the group that meets monthly in Belfast. Following a demonstration performance by the group, members of the audience will be encouraged (but not compelled!) to join in and raise the roof. Loan copies of the Sacred Harp book will be available. All welcome.
